ENVIRO-LOG URGES CAMPERS TO PRACTICE FIRE SAFETY

Earth-friendly firelog manufacturer offers tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable camping experience

ATLANTA, Ga. – May 25, 2011 – Enviro-Log®, Inc., an eco-friendly, consumer products and recycling company, offers some valuable campfire safety tips to reduce the risk of injury and environmental and property damage while camping.

According to a report by the Outdoor Foundation™, camping was the third most popular outdoor activity among American adults (age 25+) in 2010 with approximately 25 million participants. As camping continues to grow in popularity, so does the potential for accidents and injury.

“Campfires are typically the most dangerous element of any campsite and not practicing proper fire safety can result in forest fires, brush fires, destruction of natural resources and property as well the endangerment of wildlife, other campers and area residents,” said Ross McRoy, president of Enviro-Log. “Campfires should only be started in a safe, designated area of a campsite such as a proper fire ring or fire pit and away from hanging branches, dry brush and leaves. Fires should never be left unattended and campers should always completely extinguish their fires before leaving a campsite. Also, be sure to check with your state parks, campsites and recreation areas for rules on campfires as well as transportation and use of firewood.”

Enviro-Log offers the following tips for a safe and enjoyable campfire:
  1. Follow the rules. Check if the campground or area rules prohibit campfires and if the local area conditions have restricted open burning. Find out if the campground has an existing fire ring or fire pit. If there is not an existing fire pit, and pits are allowed, ensure that the site you use is at least 15 feet away from tent walls, shrubs, trees or other flammable objects, including overhanging branches. Also, check to see what kind of burning materials can be used; most states restrict transporting unapproved firewood into any state park, state forest or day-use area including: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Delaware, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington, Utah, California and Oregon.
  2. Prepare the site. Choose a spot that is protected from wind gusts and at least fifteen feet from your tent and gear. Do not build a fire at a site in hazardous, dry conditions. Clear a 15-foot diameter area around the fire location site. Remove any grass, twigs, leaves and firewood. Also, make sure there are not any tree limbs or flammable objects hanging overhead. If an existing fire ring or fire pit is not provided, dig a pit in the dirt, about a foot deep and circle the pit with rocks.
  3. Don’t burn dangerous items. Never use flammable liquids to ignite or keep your fire burning. This means, avoid gasoline, diesel fuel, lighter fluid and other dangerous fuels. Never burn aerosol cans or pressurized containers. Never put glass in the fire pit. Glass can heat up and shatter.
  4. Maintain your campfire. Keep your fire to a manageable size. Make sure children and pets are supervised when near the fire. NEVER leave your campfire unattended.
  5. Extinguish your campfire before you leave the campsite. Allow the wood or firelog to burn completely to ash, if possible. Pour water on the fire and be sure to drown ALL embers, not just the red ones. Make sure you listen for the hissing sound to stop. Stir the campfire ashes and embers with a shovel to ensure nothing is still burning. Scrape sticks and logs to remove any embers. Make sure everything is wet.

Ron Eakins, an Enviro-Log customer in Texas added, “With the gathering of fire wood prohibited in Texas state parks, I find that the Enviro-Log firelogs are an excellent substitute for real wood. I’ve even given out Enviro-Log firelogs to Boy Scout troops that have been camping nearby, and reminded them that gathering wood is restricted in the state park. The troop leaders were impressed that the flames from the logs last longer than three hours and they give off a generous amount of heat. They also appreciate the fact that the Enviro-Log firelogs are made of recycled material and that you can cook over the logs, unlike conventional firelogs.”

ENVIRO-LOG OFFERS TIPS FOR BRAVING WINTER WEATHER

Earth-friendly firelog manufacturer offers tips to keep you safe during winter storms

ATLANTA – February 15, 2011 – Enviro-Log®, Inc., an eco-friendly, consumer products and recycling company, wants to ensure you are prepared for the heavy snow and dangerously low temperatures winter storms can bring. In addition to chilly conditions outdoors, power outages during cold weather can cause the temperature inside your house to drop rapidly. According to the National Weather Service, about 20 percent of all deaths related to cold exposure occur in the house.

“We encourage every household to have an emergency kit in case of a prolonged power outage,” said Ross McRoy, president of Enviro-Log. “The kit should contain items such as a flashlight, batteries, candles, matches, firewood, firelogs, a battery powered radio, a first aid kit, bottled water, canned food, and a manual can opener. If your home does not have an alternate heat source, such as a fireplace or portable propane or kerosene heater, it is best to seek shelter elsewhere.”

Recent winter storms have caused major power outages across the country. 174,000 homes lost power just in the Chicago area on February 1. On February 2, in Texas, an average of 330,000 customers suffered from power outages on a rotating basis throughout the day. Another 20,000 customers in New York and New Jersey were affected by power outages on February 7.

“We have a free standing open wood stove and during this recent very unusual cold front, when our power went out, Enviro-Log firelogs kept us and some neighbors warm,” said Mark Shippy, an Enviro-Log customer in Texas. “We were very pleased at how easy the firelogs were to light, and how safely they burned. We especially liked how much heat they produced and that we were able to burn more than one at a time.”

Enviro-Log offers these other winter storm safety tips to ensure your health and safety during the harsh winter weather:

  • Monitor weather conditions. Listen to your radio, television, or check http://www.weather.com/ for weather reports and emergency information from the National Weather Service.
  • Avoid over-exertion when shoveling snow. Before tackling strenuous tasks in cold temperatures, consider your physical condition, the weather factors and the nature of the task. Over-exertion can bring on a heart attack, a major cause of death in the winter.
  • Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle. Every vehicle should have an emergency kit in case you get stranded or your car breaks down. The emergency kit should be stocked with the following items: blankets/sleeping bags, cellular phone or two-way radio, windshield scraper, snow brush, flashlight with extra batteries, extra winter clothes, shovel, tow chain, matches, traction aids (bag of sand or cat litter), emergency flares, jumper cables, snacks, water, a first aid kit and road maps.
  • Watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia. Protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in several layers. Keep your head and hands covered if you go outdoors. The signs of frostbite include loss of feeling and white or pale appearance in extremities such as fingers, toes, ear lobes and the tip of the nose. Signs of hypothermia can include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness and apparent exhaustion. If symptoms are detected, seek medical help immediately.
  • Check on neighbors and relatives. Help people who require special assistance such as elderly people living alone, people with disabilities and children.
  • Keep pipes from freezing. If temperatures remain below freezing, the pipes in your home may freeze. Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.

ENVIRO-LOG FIRELOGS TESTED BY OMNI ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

Enviro-Log firelogs are the only waxed cardboard firelogs that have been tested by OMNI

ATLANTA, Ga. – December 22, 2010 – Enviro-Log®, Inc., an eco-friendly, consumer products and recycling company, announced today its earth-friendly firelogs have been tested by OMNI Environmental Services, Inc. (OMNI) in five major areas including: emissions; product application safety; performance; creosote accumulation; and physical and material properties. OMNI is an independent third party products testing laboratory specializing in emissions, safety and performance testing of manufactured fuels.

“We began work with OMNI in 2004 to test the performance of our firelogs and to periodically confirm that our firelogs sold on the market have not deviated in any substantial manner against product testing claims and previous test records,” said Ross McRoy, president of Enviro-Log. “We feel the testing by OMNI gives our customers confidence that our firelogs perform. Enviro-Log is the only waxed cardboard firelog manufacturer whose claims have been tested and validated by OMNI. In addition, OMNI personnel have visited Enviro-Log’s manufacturing facility as part of their review process for manufacturing conformance.”

“Our recent emissions test found fireplaces or EPA certified woodstoves burning the Enviro-Log firelogs to have substantially lower air emissions compared to cordwood. In my opinion, the particulate reductions are large enough where federal and state air quality agencies should be looking at advocating manufactured fuels, like Enviro-Log firelogs, in areas with poor air quality,” said Lyrik Pitzman, environmental project manager for OMNI Environmental Services.

Some key findings of OMNI’s testing of Enviro-Log firelogs include:

  • The latest Enviro-Log firelog formula was found to be substantially improved over its original wax box firelog formula in terms of air emissions when following the manufacturer’s recommended lighting instructions.
  • Enviro-Log firelogs were found to have 87 percent less total particulate matter (PM) emissions, on a grams pollutant per hour of stove operation basis, than firewood in an EPA certified non-catalytic woodstove.
  • Enviro-Log firelogs have been tested for safety in fireplaces and wood heaters per portions of American National Standard Institute (ANSI)/ Underwriters Laboratories (UL®), and Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC®) standards.
  • Enviro-Log firelogs have 70-80 percent less total particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide emissions (on a grams pollutant per event basis) than cordwood (oak or fir) burned in manufactured fireplaces and EPA certified woodstoves.
  • Enviro-Log firelogs produce up to 33 percent less greenhouse gases than typical cordwood (oak or fir).
  • Enviro-Log firelogs produce 87 percent less creosote in a fireplace than oak cordwood (grams per typical fire basis).
  • Enviro-Log firelogs have more than 50 percent energy content per pound and lower moisture content than typical cordwood (oak or fir).
